How to prepare and prime a canvas
Stretching, gesso and sanding for a professional surface.
How to paint
Most store-bought canvases are pre-primed, but one or two extra coats of gesso give a smoother surface.
Apply thin coats, alternating direction, and lightly sand between coats for a fine finish.
For oil paint on raw canvas, always size and prime first — oil rots unprotected fabric over time.
